We don’t know! We know that it is a force, and that the strength of the force is related to the masses of the two objects and the distance between them. But we don’t know why or how! We think it has something to do with the Higgs boson-and that’s what they’re looking for with particle accelerarors. We think the higgs particle carries gravity a bit like how photons carry electromagnetic forces.
