I ask myself the same question. As far as I’m concerned, I spend my working life doing science I enjoy with other scientists who are excited about the same things… and they pay me for it… It’s a win/win if you ask me.
In terms of how I got here. For me the answer is ‘Just by being interested’.
I’m interested so I ask questions. I ask my teachers, my mates and the internet questions and because of that I learn. Talking to people about career paths, what they do and trying areas of science out were all important to me as well.
I didn’t really plan what areas of science I would work in – I am most interested in just being in science research – using my skills to the best of my ability. It seemed the natural thing to do after university to apply for PhD student positions… then I got one… then after my PhD, I applied for jobs… and I got the first one I applied for! I’ve just looked for opportunities that sound fun and taken any opportunity that comes my way!
