• Question: In ten years where would you like to be and where would your science be.

Asked by the arch bishop of banter to Chris, Josh, Rebecca, Rob, Susan on 16 Jun 2015. This question was also asked by Ellie C, caitlin.

I’d like to be travelling the world, or possibly lazing on a tropical beach (I’ll be 66, so retired by then!).
I hope that my science will have a whole new set of particles to explore, with LHC having discovered supersymmetry in 2017 and identified the dark matter particle, and theorists perhaps putting forward a good explanation for dark energy. My friend Ed will be living the high life as his patent for motor control makes him a billionaireMATOMO_URL The difference between neutrinos and antineutrinos, first measured with precision in 2020, will be helping theorists to understand why the universe is made of matter and not antimatter. Cheap, compact particle accelerators will be starting to revolutionise cancer therapy.

Well, one can dream. Some of this may come true. I’m not sure which I’d put my money on.

      * The patent is real. I suspect the chance of making billions is a figment of my imagination.

In ten years, I would definitely like to be more independent, having managed to apply for some research funding to run my own experiments and hire some staff to help me with them. I would like to be using the best brain imaging equipment that exists (whatever that is in ten years time – maybe MRI combined with PET or MRI combined with CT). I would like to be trying to improve healthcare for whatever brain disease is the biggest problem, probably something like dementia, improving early diagnosis and improving chances of identifying the right treatment for each person.
