Because my research has no immediate commercial impact, the best source of funding is the Government, via the Research Councils (for particle physics, the Science and Technology Funding Council, or STFC). We apply for a grant every 3 years or so – there’s an application being considered right now (wish me luck!).

Some of our group’s applied research, e.g. work with applications in CO2 storage or security scanning, is funded by industry or by other branches of the Government. Some charitable foundations also fund research, but this is mostly (not always) for work that has medical applications.

I can apply to funding councils such as the medical research council or other government organisations like the national institute for health research. Also, I can get smaller amounts of money from charities that support the cause of my research, such as action on hearing loss.
