To quote a book title by Richard Feynman, “the pleasure of finding things out”. I like the idea that I might discover something new that would help us to understand the universe better. I like the way science evolves, with new answers always prompting new questions. I like the fact that clouds (“this experiment does not agree with expectations”) eventually turn out to have silver linings (“this discrepancy with expectation eventually led to new discovery X”). I like its international nature – particle physics in particular has always been a multinational endeavour.

It’s got to be the “right answers”

I’m not a fan of ambiguity, or “there is no right answer”, in that way science is almost black and white, you’re either right or wrong. Sure it takes a while to work out which one you were but there is a final word either way.

I love that science is absolutely endless – we will go on finding things out forever because we can’t possibly know all the things that there are out there! There will always be something to keep me busy!
